About A Journey Through The House Welcome to - "A Journey Through the House" - an extraordinary photographic collection of specular memories captured at the iconic Club Zanzibar, documenting the trendsetting moments in club music that laid the foundation for the culture that is evident today. In early 1980's Newark, New Jersey's Club Zanzibar was a vision of hope for the city that had not yet recovered from the historic riots of 1967; poverty, drugs and crime were prevalent. Yet, Club Zanzibar became a world-renowned hotspot where people from all races, socioeconomic background and sexual orientation would gather. The diversity of the partygoers set a climate that was unmistakably liberating, which evoked people to express themselves freely, breaking the barriers of societal social norms. The display of vibrant fashion forward creativity, uninhibited dance, extraordinary music played by DJ's on a sound system designed and installed by Richard Long & Associates, a 5-time winner of the Billboard Top Sound System Design & Installation award; created an environment that was unmatched. At the epicenter of it all was Vincent Bryant, the exclusive house photographer, capturing these memorable moments through pictures. Club Zanzibar also represented the era of music that ushered in a new style of dance music played by its DJ's, called Club music. It later evolved to what is now House music. Since the 80's, those who had the honor to experience the nightlife at Club Zanzibar believe it is the birthplace of "House Music". This book is a visual collective of the events where entertainers like Sylvester, Chaka Khan, Grace Jones, Two Tons o' Fun and Phyllis Hyman graced the stage before the crowds of people who made Club Zanzibar a part of music and entertainment history. Although Club Zanzibar, the building, is no more, the music and magical moments created there are now legendary. It was a privilege and a joy to have photographed these memories and now it is my pleasure to invite you to take - "A Journey Through the House!" Written by: Vincent Bryant
