In order to ensure -tothis work the greatest possible degree of utility, I have, in imitation of the most celebrated grammarians, as well as of the Academy, Suppressed every thing foreign to the genius of our ianguage and'i have been particularly careful to give, in the most plain and perspicuous manner, the only ruies we. The grammar which has long been taught in the University ofparis, and not the grammar of the Grecians and Latinists of the last,' and'the bezinnmg of the present century, because, as' the iabbe' Girard expiesses it: we ought to speak French, in speaking about French.
