The Michigan One Room School Association states that there were over 7200 one-room schools in Michigan alone.
Detroit, the largest city in our state, has closed over 200 schools since 2000.
Small towns have had their schools closed and left vacant or abandoned all over Michigan.
Due to the sheer number of schools that have closed in the last century, it has been difficult to document their histories, leading to many buildings that have been entirely forgotten, even by the people living on the land they once stood.
We have collected 35 buildings and slowly discovered the stories that lie behind their walls; from well-known urban exploration sites like the massive Cooley High School in Detroit, all the way down to the nearly forgotten Dickinson School in Newaygo County.
