'Alma, For Now' is a story we see frequently in children's books; it is a story about the power of kindness and respecting one another for exactly who they are. What makes this story unique is that it is based on the true events of Alma, who, as young as four years old, did not identify with the sex assigned to her at birth. Her parents gave her the language, "I am Alma, for now", to use when navigating gendered experiences from this early age. The story takes us through Alma's first day at a new school and how her confidence and bravery inspired this book. Alma, like everyone, is so many things beyond her gender. Alma can run super fast, Alma is an artist, Alma is a loving sister, and Alma is a great friend, but she is worried she won't make any friends on her first day at a new school. However, she finds a friend in Taylor who sees and accepts Alma for exactly who she is, and by the end of the day, Alma is ready for day 2!
