The screen doors were hanging this way and that way and when he opened the right one, it fell off the bottom hinge into his hands. Jeff didn't say anything as he set it against the wall. Selena knew this wasn't a good beginning.
Eyeing the front doors suspiciously covered with peeling paint and boarded over broken windows, they both stood silently for a second. "May I have the key?" Jeff asked uncertainly.
Selena nodded stunned he was still willing to go forward and fumbled in her purse for the key.
The doors seemed sturdy though he had difficulty turning the key in the lock. Finally there was a click and the door jerked open an inch. Jeff hesitated a moment before opening the door further and turned to Selena as if to ask if she really was sure she wanted to enter.
