God's grace is free. As free as the south-wind on a summer evening. As free as a mocking bird or a mountain in the distance. It is there for the one who truly wants it.Which is what, in my earlier years I wasuneasy about. How could such a wonderful thingas God's grace be free? It took me years before Iunderstood. Many great things are free. It doesn't mean they are cheap or easy to be had. Like that high mountainin the distance. To climb him is free, usually at least. It is there for the taking. For a very high mountainit is free, but not easy to get there. Ever dreamt of climbing the Himalaya? It is free. But it is very expensiveat the same time. Preparation, material, companions, stores, gear, travel expenses and more.It adds up. May the mountain be free, the way there is not. Such is, to my understanding, God's grace.Like the apple hanging too high. It is free for thetaking. But how to get it?I spent years on cheap detours, never willing to takethis free thing. Like Naaman, who would refuse the easy way of dipping in the river, he figured something big should happen. But nothing big happened. That is what grace is like. Easy, accessible, beautiful.Terrifying, costly to the pride, looming peak of athreatening far away mountain. Wonderfully free.Man is free to climb it. If he has the guts to go for it.No amount of money, no picture taken or book readwill take this from him. In order to get it he needs to get up an go. Go to the fountain for free water. The water of the Spirit is free as well. If ever you have been thirsty, get some. It is fearsomely free.
