Thomas is sold to Jervaulx Abbey by his father as his new wife says they can't afford to feed him. He is not at all religious but decides to make the best of it. He has many brushes with authority, but usually manages to talk himself out of trouble. Against all odds, he eventually takes Holy Orders and finds himself in line to become the next Abbot. But Father Philip is mysteriously murdered, and a rival points the finger at Thomas. How will he get himself out of this predicament?
