If you’re a fan of bubble tea beverages (a.k.a. boba), then chances are you’ve seen Bubble Waffles sold right along with them. Also known as gai daan zai in Cantonese, they first appeared on the Hong Kong street-food scene way back in the 1950s. Later nicknamed “Bubble Waffles,” at least in part for their uncanny resemblance to actual bubble wrap, they’ve been a standby in cafés, sidewalk stalls, and home kitchens ever since... and now, in the freezers at your neighborhood Trader Joe’s, too! Made with coconut milk, wheat flour, cane sugar, rice bran shortening, and vanilla bean paste, our vegan Trader Joe’s Bubble Waffles are fluffy yet chewy, sweet yet savory, and simple yet versatile. Heat them from frozen in your air fryer, toaster oven, or microwave, and their crispy edges and mochi-like middles are ready to be topped with everything from fresh fruit & whipped cream, to Cookie Butter & bananas, to French Vanilla Ice Cream & All Occasion Sprinkle. You can even top them with savory fare, like shredded Le Gruyère Cheese and chopped leeks, or fried eggs and Sriracha Sauce. Really, the sky’s the limit here—don’t let anything burst your Bubbles!
