My name is Gregg Kervill. I am dyslexic, and this book is my 70-year story. In it I explain how I overcame reading and writing 'challenges' and became a respected international consultant and, against all odds, a widely published author.
Dyslexia has brought me incredible benefits, without which I could never have achieved all that I have () Nor would I have experienced the lifestyle and freedom that I enjoyed.
However, Understanding and Using dyslexia's gifts is not simple. My first task may sound simple, but it was not.
I had to accept that dyslexia was not a curse and incorporate it into my life.
It was only when my mind was free of fear and concerns; that I could Accept, Recognize, and Manage my dyslexia.
I am not 'cured' of my dyslexia, and it did not "go away": I have just incorporated its positive gifts to create solutions to overcome its potentially destructive elements. (I still cannot remember my alphabet and have a copy taped to my desk where I refer to it daily.)
I spent my first 30 years using science and math to substitute for my inability to read, write, speak publicly, or even read aloud in class. I had not then realized I was dyslexic. I had neither identified nor developed my unique skills, and I failed every examination that required me to create or even to copy sentences.
Mathematics and the Sciences eventually allowed me to demonstrate my ability and understand that I had powerful gifts.
My ability to solve problems was key to my successful early career as an electronics design engineer. My ability as a storyteller was an essential element in my later career as a self-employed engineering consultant, presenter, and author.
After moving from the UK to the US, my wife, Penny, noticed that I was dyslexic. I was then 50 years old.
I eventually realized that dyslexia had taken my ability to read and write but had given me unique gifts and benefits. Without my knowledge, dyslexia had shaped and directed my future.
Key Elements of this Book.
Hardcopy puts the reader in charge, using a highlighter to identify passages and make the book theirs!
Large, "Open Dyslexic" font improves readability.
Cartoons reinforce key points and provide daily inspiration.
Annotations, (S) for suggestions and (W) for workarounds, allow readers to find solutions.
QR Codes allow readers to conduct further research.
This book explains my path in detail; I hope that others will follow.
During my last 20 years as a consultant, I worked with high-level officials in Ireland, England, Brussels, Slovenia, and the US. But, my proudest achievement was when I was commissioned to write for Elsevier (one of the world's largest publishers) to become an internationally published author. I have published more than 50 books, several hundred articles in international journals, and several thousand blogs to date.
What did dyslexia do for me?
Dyslexia takes from us, but it also delivers more powerful gifts than those it takes.
I had terrible difficulty reading and writing, but dyslexia gave me the tools I needed to overcome those difficulties.
Creative Thinking and Decision Making.
For 20-years, I did not recognize my ability to process information or think creatively and laterally was many times faster and significantly better than those about me. I am confident these unique abilities allowed me to understand and overcome my dyslexia and excel in my career as a design engineer.
Storytelling Ability.
This gained me early recognition as a writer (publishing my first article in my 20's). Storytelling was essential to my later career as a self-employed engineering consultant. Talking with customers is the first step to gaining their confidence; and money! To be a successful presenter, you must first be a good storyteller.
Dyslexia is an asset.
Would I choose to live my life again without dyslexia? No. ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Dyslexia bestowed fantastic gifts upon me and made me who I am. Without those gifts, I would lose my most vital abilities.
My life is much richer and more complete because of my dyslexia. I have traveled the world, earned a high income and have settled in warm, sunny South Carolina with the Love of my Life.<
/p>
However, to live my life again, this time knowing early on that I was dyslexic, would let me build on my unique (dyslexic) skills, avoid some pitfalls, and I could have achieved so much more. This possibility has passed me by, but it is not too late for you or for the dyslexic person you know.
You have time to identify the gifts that dyslexia has brought to you.
You have time to develop those gifts and to develop unique skills.
You have time to discover a career that will take advantage of those unique skills and leverage your future.
