The December 2003 NATO training course in Hamburg from which these 12 papers were selected, was subtitled Risks Associated with Industrial Agriculture. The underlying theme is that as agriculture in former socialist countries is privatized, it should avoid duplicating practices that are now discredited and being discarded in western Europe. At the same time the contributors, scientists from across the continent, realize that lessons learned transforming agriculture in a mature capitalist economy cannot be transferred directly to eastern and central Europe. Food quality and safety, environmental education, consumer perception, sustainability, and organic agriculture are among the topics. The index is slender.
