Another fine release from the Soulscape reissue label, HOLD ON collects various demos and singles from southern soul journeyman Tommy Tate. Although ultimately a footnote in the larger history of soul and R&B, Tate's work as a singer and songwriter portrays an artist of deep talent who simply missed the major breaks that brought fame and glory to others. From his take on "Stand By Me" that opens the collections to the demo of his own "Hold On (To What We've Got)," Tate delivers a dose of classic late-1960s/early-'70s soul as impassioned and subtly crafted as almost anything from the era.
