Based on a true family story and set in the home-front America of 1943, I'LL REMEMBER YOU is a bittersweet portrait of a conflicted, wartime romance between an idealistic, proud, small-town Jewish girl and a Jewish soldier from Brooklyn with horrific memories as a child in war-torn Poland during World War One. Their relationship struggles with personal doubt, misunderstanding and childhood trauma. This was a time of great turbulence on the home front with hasty marriages, broken promises and the uncertainty of war. The story is played out in the shadow of anti-Semitism and racism of the time - in the country itself and within the military. We were a people fighting a war to preserve democracy abroad but experiencing deep seated hatred and intolerance at home.
Bobbie Feinman travels to Miami Beach with a girlfriend in 1943 for a vacation and finds herself in the middle of a military buildup. Despite her father's heralded warning not to get involved with a soldier, she meets Murray, whose childhood memories give him unique insight into duty and his own mortality but frustrate her sensible nature and challenge her perceptions. The desperation of the times is mirrored in their pathetic and often comic attempts to communicate as needs go unmet and silences become golden truths quietly tolerated amidst the uncertainty of war. Their troubled romance leads to marriage after three weeks, but doubts and anxieties remain, destroying any hope of a future together as they coast along on the quicksand of their hurried vows. Thinking he may not really love her and believing he doesn't expect to survive the war, she witnesses several compelling incidents that challenge her preconceived notions. And, as he leaves on a troop ship for England, she cries for this stranger she calls 'husband' and reflects on what a life together might be like if..... An epilogue is set in 1994.
