Advances in understanding molecular mechanisms involved in inflammatory responses active in known immune-mediated neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and lupus are being extended to treat Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Thus Minegar and Alexander (Louisiana State U. Health Center, Shreveport) introduce 18 chapters reviewing findings, new concepts (e.g. leukocyte microparticles), and new methodologies (e.g. gene microarray technologies) emerging from research on neuroinflammation. Contributors also describe disorders in which the inflammatory role is not well understood (e.g., HIV-associated dementia).
