Jack's Back is a surprisingly effective low-budget mystery written and directed by ex-gaffer Rowdy Herrington and coproduced by ex-key grip Tim Moore which features a strong dual-role performance by James Spader as a young medical student and his twin brother. Exactly 100 years after the original murders by the infamous, never captured Jack the Ripper, Los Angeles is menaced by a serial killer who patterns himself after "Jack" killing prostitutes in the same manner as his namesake. The film begins as John Westford (James Spader) a young medical student who may have inadvertently stumbled upon the killer, is murdered. His mysterious twin brother Rick, (also Spader) arrives to investigate. Despite a somewhat awkward beginning Jack's Back is a engrossing thriller with surprising plot twists which keep the audience guessing.. Smartly scripted and well directed by Herrington, the movie doesn't waste one moment and manages to sustain the suspense while neatly juggling the intricate shifts of his plot. A mood of suspicion and distrust pervades the film, as the characters, and the audience, can't decide whom to trust.
