Director Chantelle Squires's historical drama is based on the life of Jane Elizabeth Manning James, who is one of the best-documented African American Mormons of the 19th century. After travelling to Nauvoo, Illinois, to heed the call of Joseph Smith (the founder of Mormonism), Manning (Danielle Deadwyler) establishes a complex friendship with his wife Emma Smith (Emily Goss).
