This is a critical edition of an adaptation of the , the first western collection of eastern apologues, written between 1105 and 1110 by Petrus Alphonsi. The literary and social impact of this work was profound; we find adaptations of its prologues in the vernacular literatures of western Europe and evidence that medieval ecclesiastics used them in their sermons.
