Having defeated the Crusaders at the Battle of Hattin and conquered Jerusalem in 1187, Saladin has given rise to a fertile literary myth. This work analyzes the way he has been portrayed in French literature and the issues related to this representation, from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the nineteenth century.
