A young diplomat and his wife thrive on extra marital affairs. The wife sets her husband after her cousin, who has stolen her lover. The husband ends up dead, and the wife goes mad before she burns her husband's incriminating letters and becomes horribly disfigured by the fire. Story is taken from an 18th century novel by Choderlos de Laclos and the subject matter has remained controversial since that time.
