Brooklyn Wainwright, experta en libros raros y antigüedades, participa en unas jornadas sobre encuadernación organizadas por el Bay Area Book Arts de San Francisco, en las que se subasta, entre otros, la primera edición de Oliver Twist, de Charles Dickens. A los pocos días del inicio del evento, la directora, Layla Fontaine, aparece muerta por una herida de bala y Brooklyn decide investigar el crimen. Brooklyn Wainwright, an expert in rare books and antiques, participates in a bookbinding conference organized by the Bay Area Book Arts in San Francisco, in which the first edition of Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens, is auctioned, among others. A few days after the start of the event, the director, Layla Fontaine, is found dead from a gunshot wound and Brooklyn decides to investigate the crime.
