The little Peruvian port of Paita was a resource for the New England whaling fleet in the mid-nineteenth century, and this very thorough study breaks new ground in its analysis of the influence of the whalers on the port between 1832 and 1865, along with subsequent North American economic developments. The book also details the careers of U.S. consuls and expatriate U.S. businessmen in this outpost of empire.
