Our main reason for writing Pennies, Nickels & Dimes-Volume II is to provoke a discussion about the history of the African American entrepreneur and the African American economy. In the book, we examine the past, present and future of African American entrepreneurship in America. What did African American entrepreneurship and the African American economic infrastructure look like 100 years ago, and how does it compare to where we are today? In exploring the economic history of other ethnic groups, we see how timing, opportunity, culture and individual ingenuity impact business and capital formation in America. We also delve into various business funding mechanisms such as venture capital, private equity, angel investing and crowdfunding and propose a starting point for developing a national initiative that would utilize these resources to support the creation and/or expansion of African American-owned businesses.
