The translation of this early work by Jean Jacques Rousseau was originally published in 1889 and we are now republishing it. 'Profession of Faith of a Savoyard Vicar' was intended by Rousseau to be a defence of religion from the viewpoint of a humble Catholic vicar. The vicar's creed is Socinianism (or Unitarianism as it is called today). Because it rejected original sin and divine Revelation, both Protestant and Catholic authorities took offence.
