Powered by Sam McGee's ace guitar and banjo picking, the McGee brothers by the mid '50s were a living link between the medicine show old-time music of the early 20th century and the folk revival. The guitar and banjo duo specialized in a truly hillbilly style with strong comic underpinnings a la Dave Macon and Grandpa Jones but with dizzying chops. When Mike Seeger (Pete's half-brother) and other folk enthusiasts rediscovered them in the mid 50's, the duo became staples of folk-revival festivals, including Newport. SAM & KIRK MCGEE LIVE: 1955-1967 OUTSTANDING IN THEIR FIELD culls 26 tracks from three concerts from this period.
