This Christmas is special for Sam and her brother, Nathan. Their uncle has just returned from England and brought each of them a gift that he bought in an antique shop there: for Nathan, a hunting horn and for Sam, a cameo necklace. The owner of the shop sent a warning about the horn - that it was to be used "only in time of great need." The following morning, the two children go for a hike in the woods, become separated, and Sam blows the horn that Nathan has dropped, in order to bring him back to her. The horn's call does bring Nathan, but it also transports both children to Sherwood Forest during the time of Robin Hood, Little John, and the other Merry Men. Sam meets Lady Marion who is beautiful, mysterious, and a witch. The Lady tells Sam that she and her brother have been brought to the outlaw camp in order to fulfill a purpose. As Nathan and Sam share in the adventures, laughter, and danger of life with the Merry Men, they must answer for themselves the questions: Why were they brought here? Will they get to return home? How? The Hunting Horn is the first volume of the trilogy Scraps of Time, which chronicles Sam's travels into the past as she witnesses the dangers, joys, and heroism that accompany life in any age. She is also driven by the questions: Why have I been given this ability to time travel? For what purpose?
