As you can see, this book is not a long magnum opus. Its purpose is to show the reader the urgency and seriousness of the most multi-faceted, dangerous crisis our world ever has faced.
More importantly
, it summarizes solutions to that crisis, and ways we all can help implement many of those solutions.
The book is not an academic thesis or scientific journal article. It's written for both lay people and those who have varying degrees of natural science and social science expertise. Despite that and its relatively short length, be assured that scientific rigor was not sacrificed during its creation. Every effort has been made to make the book both accurate and up to date. The work is not original scholarly research by me; instead, it's the communicating and synthesis of same done by others. [In that regard, it's somewhat similar to what Rachel Carson did in her piece, Silent Spring.] You will, however, find original ideas of mine here; but such do not constitute empirical research.
For background and context in writing this book, I relied on my own observations and experiences during years of both office and field work in various aspects of ecology, environmental regulatory compliance, and environmental geography. The core of "library" research for the book, though, is from a review/study of well over 250 scholarly journal articles on appropriate subjects. Then, too, numerous textbooks, professional conference reports, scientific news reports, and relevant essays were utilized. See the "References" section for key sources.
Without a holistic worldview, I don't see how we can live in harmony with the rest of Nature, or have any significant degree of sustainability. We must heed Barry Commoner's declaration: "Nature knows best". Yes, it's a paradigm shift in ethics, fraught with challenges; but it's necessary if we are to survive and thrive on Earth. This little book with big concepts shows us how to get off our current destructive path.
