Excerpt from The Canadian Builder and Carpenter, Vol. 2: October, 1912
There was some excuse for the lack of closets in many of the old-fashioned mansi-ons of Colonial days. Built perfectly square and divided into four primly rectangular rooms and a long straight hall on each floor, there was little room left for cupboards of any description unless the space between the walls was utilized for this purpose. Modern builders cannot be so easily vindicated, however, since their departures from the uncompromising style of their predecessors have been accompanied by the introduction of jogs and alcoves eminently suited for closets, but too frequently allowed to remain merely wasted space.
