In the year following Oecolampadius' arrival in Basel on November 17, 1522, he lived and labored in Andreas Cratander's publishing house, struck up a fruitful friendship with Ulrich Zwingli, published three Chrysostom translations, began his famous lectures on the prophet Isaiah, was appointed ordinary professor of biblical languages at the university, held a disputation on four theses refuting false charges against the Reformation movement, and published a lengthy biblical treatise On the Distribution of Alms in the form of a letter to his friend Bernhard Adelmann. Three other works emerged in this year, all of them liturgical, and each claiming, or at least inferring, some connection with the increasingly influential Oecolampadius: The Testament of Jesus Christ, A Litany to God the Father, and A Brief Daily Confession. All of the above, along with Oecolampadius' correspondence from the year, are represented here: three prefaces to his Chrysostom translations, excerpts from his Isaiah lectures, with the remaining pieces and Oecolampadius' correspondence rendered in full, some in fresh translations, but most brought into English for the time in 500 years. With this volume, Oecolampadius' first year in Basel unfolds in his own words. Now the reader can trace his progress first-hand, from the monastery to his ministry on the Ebernburg (Sown on Rock: The Sermon on the Vernacular and the Correspondence with Hedio) to the threshold of his inspiring and influential Sermons on the First Epistle of John, delivered in December 1523
