How our collective inability to reach beyond the moon in our quest to understand our place in the universe led one NASA engineer to combine 19th Century engineering and optics with 21st Century technology and bring about a whole new way of looking at the universe. In doing so, he alone devised a method of finding the astronomical holy grail--an Earth-like-- planet light-years from Earth itself.
