On a cold and stormy day, Dec 1821, Margaret Tindal Shuttleworth, was the last woman to be publicly executed - hanged - in Montrose, Scotland. Occurring in the early 19th century, judgements were quick, harsh, patronizing, and very often predetermined on 'thin' and conflicting evidence; including a great deal of local 'gossip'! She was convicted of murdering her husband by hitting him in the head with a fireplace poker during a drunken quarrel. But as written in the newspapers of the time, she held fast to her confirmation of innocence to the last - "...even as she stood upon the drop."
