This is the third and final volume of the First Trilogy of the Mid-Sea Chronicles. Tiranu Shupari, the Priest/Magician first introduced in Volume One, has just arrived in the Pirate Kingdom and there meets the Pirate King who is going to help restore him to the City-of-Gold and liberate his father, the King-of-Kings who has been turned into a powerless puppet by the Sun Fathers, who have allied themselves with the True Believers, religious fanatics, who control the area just south of the Pirate King. He discovers a social revolution going on in the Pirate's realm that he is at first impressed by, but as the months pass, he begins to see the dissent that the Pirate King didn't want him to see. And all the hidden things the Pirate didn't want him to find out about. Like in the other books in this series, there is magic and mystery, Immortals and Gods, and demons and monsters, and believable characters that could just as well live next door. It is a multi-cultural, multi-racial society stratified into castes that are breaking down, and adhering to a Divine Code that doesn't work any more. Everyone wants a change, but as many want to go forward as want to go back. The battle that the book leads up to will determine in which direction the Mid-Sea will go, and those who live and those who die surprised the author as much as it will the reader.
