When John the Baptist began his ministry, he was asked, "Are you that prophet?"
The Jews knew God had foretold that a prophet like Moses would come, and they were looking for him. And they also knew if they didn't obey the words that prophet spoke, it would be required of them.
John wasn't that prophet. But Jesus is.
