Ali has spent her teenage years in darkness, afraid of emotional attachment, in one room with other survivors but now has decided to leave those who wait for death in a search for more. She is braver and stronger than she knows and in a dead world she comes to realise that all we really have is each other. Alone and scared she makes enemies of dangerous domineering characters, watches curiously while those around her experience mass hallucinations within a religious cult, finds pockets of nature untouched by desolation suffered by the rest of the world, is held captive, becomes the companion of a dog with a secret, and faces death more than once. However, she has the chance to begin a new life, choose a new name and a new world of friendship, self-discovery and love await her.
She is a survivor, but she wants more and with determination draws together a group of individuals creating a family of her own. Together they search for a place they can be happy, free and call home.
