Excerpt from The Silver-Burdett Arithmetics, Vol. 1
Chapter I furnishes problem material and. Gives the method of presenting the subject for the first two years, in conformity with the best modern courses of study. This chapter is mainly for the teacher; and in courses in which arithmetic is not a formal study of the first year, or of the first and second years, it will serve as a systematic and exhaustive review to the point at which formal arith metic is begun.
Although on account of varying demands and conditions, no arbitrary limit can be set for a year's work, Chapter II will be found to contain about what can be covered in the third year in a majority of schools. In this chapter, em phasis is placed on Addition and Subtraction, the Multi plication Tables, and simple Measurements.
Chapter III is planned to meet the usual demands for the work of the fourth year. It emphasizes Multiplication and Division, treats easy Fractions through addition and subtraction, and Decimals through hundredths it enlarges upon the treatment of Measurements as found in Chapter II, and provides ample drill in Simple Bills.
