The three fires are love, avarice, and ambition, the ruling motives in this passionate story of Nila, a young Hindu girl of Ceylon. Her love for the handsome Moslem, Tuan Noor, can bring only sorrow, and she submits to a marriage with the wealthy Hindu, Motu Rayen; the discarded lover's long revenge brings the complexities of the plot to a pitch of tragic intensity, and its swift action, romantic character, and exotic setting make the whole story one of breathless interest.
In its vigor and color and emotional appeal the novel shows the skill that Miss Burr has won by her very successful work in verse. Miss Burr spent some time in Ceylon recently, and the atmosphere as are many of the events of her novel, are drawn directly from her experiences there.
