"Jacques Demy's experimental musical, featuring a musical score by Michel Legrand and all-sung dialogue, is the film that catapulted Catherine Deneuve to international stardom. She plays Genevieve, a 17-year-old girl who is madly in love with local automobile mechanic Guy (Nino Castelnuovo). Genevieve's mother (Anne Vernon) runs a local flower shop and desperately needs money to save her business from collapsing. She is dead set against Genevieve's relationship with Guy, thinking that her daughter can do better for herself ... particularly when rich, middle-aged Roland Cassard (Marc Michel) walks into the shop and falls instantly in love with Genevieve. But Genevieve and Guy are in love and they meet clandestinely, ultimately consummating their relationship the night before Guy is set to leave for a two-year stint in the army. After Guy leaves, Genevieve finds out that she is pregnant. Roland offers to marry her and raise the child, and when Guy never writes back to her, she accepts his proposal. Finally, when Guy returns to town after two years in Algeria, he finds things have drastically changed. Having lost his love and with no prospects for the future, he drinks and sinks into a depression. But then Medelaine (Ellen Farmer), the woman who was a companion for Guy's elderly aunt, attracts his eye and he soon discovers she has always been in love with him."
