INTRODUCTION
Alumoottil Kochukunju Channar was a formidable figure in Central Travancore-a master of Kalaripayattu and a distinguished barrister at the London Bar Council. His intellect, skill, and influence set him apart in an era of rigid social hierarchies. At a time when even the Diwan did not own a car, Channar imported one, symbolizing his remarkable success. His unparalleled stature granted him special privileges, including private audiences with the king-an honor few could claim. As the highest taxpayer in the treasury, his contributions to society were undeniable. Yet, despite his immense wealth and achievements, Channar faced the constraints imposed upon him by his birth. Denied the right to drive on temple roads, he carved his own path-both literally and figuratively-by constructing his own roads, a testament to his resilience and determination. His close bond with the king, however, bred resentment among the Diwan and the royal family. But his greatest challenge did not come from them-it came from within his own family. His nephews, discontented with his refusal to relinquish his business empire, harbored deep animosity. Among them, only Sreedharan Channar possessed the skill to match him in Kalaripayattu. When Channar was assassinated, the king swiftly sentenced Sreedharan to death. Yet, questions lingered-was he truly the one responsible? Or was there a greater conspiracy at play? Over time, this tragic and mysterious chapter became woven into the folklore of Venad. This tale of ambition, betrayal, and mystery served as the inspiration for the iconic Manichitrathazhu franchise. The script was masterfully crafted by Madhu Muttom, a distinguished member of the Alummoottil family, whose storytelling brilliance immortalized this enigmatic legend.
