The Great Depression, extended to every corner of the globe, including the British colonies in Africa. Those difficult times found James McKinley and Harry Mann abandoned by their families while they were still just teenagers. Alone and desperate for work, they found each other and salvation at the doorstep of George Brockman. The old farmer took the boys in and gave them employment on his farm in Southern Rhodesia. Finally, the two had a place to belong and the semblance of a family, something they always longed for. James and Harry would become inseparable friends and when George's beautiful daughter Lisa arrives from England, James would fall hopelessly in love. All this happiness would come crashing down when Germany attacked Poland and plunged the world into war. James joins the allied forces, leaving Harry behind. While James fights Rommel in North Africa, Harry is accused of being a Nazi and is locked up in an internment camp. There he is befriended by an older German and the two attempt a daring escape across the border into Portuguese East Africa. James returned wounded from the war, but the real damage is not physical. Deep emotional scars leave James struggling to put his life back together again. He finally realizes that he must find Harry again and find out the truth about his old friend for himself.
