Based on the novel by J.M. Coetzee, a local magistrate (Johnny Depp) takes up a position at a remote outpost on the fringes of the kingdom. His distance from the heart of the government begins to take a toll on his psyche, ultimately pushing him to reassess his loyalty to his nation as a whole.
