Excerpt from A History of the Phoenix Park Patriots: Brady, Curley, Caffrey, Fagan, Kelly, Poole, O'donnell; The Brave Deeds for Which They Died; Traitors, Mock-Trials, Hangings
The deed, and the sober second thought of the exiled Irish and all not and liberty-loving peoples the wide world over justifies, what but of late was heralded as a crime. A conservatism that denies the right of man to act, according to the best lights of his own conscience, is slavish, and the object of this little book is to record the deeds of the brave men who, in killing Cavendish and Burke, acted in obedi ence to their convictions and conscience, full in the satisfaction of doing a service to their native land. Surely, they cannot be taxed with undertaking the deed to seek the cheap approbation, of an un thinking every-day populace, even at home, or in the wider theatre of 5 the great outside world. To speak of them as they really were, and u give the public an insight into their lives, is the Object of this modest.
