Edgar Rice Burroughs
failed at a number of business ventures before he wrote his first short story, "Under the Moons of Mars" (1911), published in All-Story magazine. It was so successful that Burroughs turned to writing full time. All-Story had just raised its price to fifteen cents and needed a novel strong enough to hold its readers despite the price increase. The editor suggested that Burroughs submit a sequel to "Under the Moons of Mars." Instead, Burroughs submitted Tarzan. The delighted editor decided to run Tarzan complete in one issue. Six years later, in 1917, the Chicago publisher A.C. McClurg Company printed Burrough's story "Under the Moons of Mars" in book form under its new name: "A Princess of Mars." The company reportedly published just over 10,000 copies of the book.
D2R Publishing
