RCMP Constable Alexandra Houston and her friend and partner, police service dog Silver, continue their adventures in a series of cases that take them across Canada, from coast-to-coast-to coast. This second omnibus edition contains novels five through eight in the "Adventures of the First Woman Mountie" series. It follows Alex and Silver as they are sent to investigate the mystery of Second World War artillery shells that seem to be washing up on a beach in northwest British Columbia and are having disturbing effects on the children that find them (Book 5, "An Inseparable Mountie"). Later, a Soviet nuclear-powered spy satellite veers off course and explodes over Canada's extreme north, triggering a large military search operation. But there is a search within the search, as Alex, Silver, and colleagues from military intelligence and the FBI are sent in undercover to discover whether one of the satellite's top-secret components may have survived (Book 6, "An Indispensable Mountie"). Next Alex and Silver embark on a cross-Canada train journey to look for security vulnerabilities in advance of an upcoming VIP trip. At least, that's their cover assignment. In reality, Alex, Silver, and colleague Const. Jack McDonald, are after bigger game. To complicate matters, some strange behaviours of several of their fellow passengers resolve into break-ins, intrigue, and a growing certainty on Alex's part that quite a few people on the train besides herself are not who they seem to be (Book7, "An Inexorable Mountie"). Finally, a chance encounter with two suspicious characters on the front lawn of Canada's Parliament Buildings prompts Alex to do a little investigating. The results take her and Silver from the Pacific coast of British Columbia to the Atlantic coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador, on the trail of a professional agitator whose appearances at organized protest events seem to coincide with a trail of violence, injuries, and death (Book 8, "An Intrepid Mountie").
