The Bering Strait links the Arctic Ocean with the Bering Sea and separates Asia and North America. The international boundary between the United States and Russia, the former U.S.S.R., runs through the middle of the Strait. Two Islands sit in the middle of this passage, Big Diomede and Little Diomede. Russia owns Big Diomede and the United States owns Little Diomede. Both islands are staffed by the armed forces of each nation. At the narrowest point 2.5 miles of open water separate these superpowers. Conflict is inevitable.
