The influence of in Brazilian music may have begun with the of , but they were not the end of the story. The art of the great guitarist (and his brother ) was deeply rooted in Bachian counterpoint, and now, another generation carries the tradition forward. is a major influence here, fully credited by guitarist ; he is present as an arranger of much of the music and as the composer of a full-of-surprises that hits all the Baroque notes but keeps turning harmonic corners as it proceeds. Yet the young , here on his sophomore release, is not a knock-off of ; a player of undeniable charisma, he has a livelier, lighter style, and he plays some newer pieces in arrangements by and . No recording location is given in the rather sparse booklet, but the work of producer is exemplary; he puts the listener up close to ' nimble fingers without drowning that listener in extraneous noise. In all, this is a hugely enjoyable album that helps build as an emerging star of his instrument. ~ James Manheim
