A new baby coming into the family can be a difficult time for a young child. Feelings of jealousy can arise, not only from all of the attention being directed toward the baby, but also because a Mommy's time now needs to be split up between the children, which takes away time that the older child is used to having. A gift given to the older child from the baby helps. It will give the older sibling a feeling of being cared about by this baby that suddenly shows up and changes the family dynamics. Also explaining that the older child is a BIG brother or BIG sister makes it a little more about them, which will make them feel more included in the whole process of change.
