Why so much blood? What is God's preoccupation with blood? Have you ever wondered why "blood" plays such a significant role in Christianity? Why did God establish blood sacrifices? Why did the blood of animals cover people's sins in the Old Testament? Why did Jesus have to come to earth as a man to shed His blood? Why did Jesus say, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have eternal life"? Blood, blood, blood! In our sanitized civilization, it all seems so brutal. Why, then, is there so much blood? This book attempts to answer that question from the perspective of the Bible. The proverb 'blood is thicker than water' is profound and true. Many understand the age-old saying to acknowledge that family ties run far deeper than other relationships. The truth, however, is that over time, the meaning of this saying has changed. This is perhaps because the original quote used the word 'covenant.' Blood in the original quote did not refer to family ties at all. It was the "water" that referred to family connection. Water referenced the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby in the womb. On the other hand, the image of blood referred not to family ties but to a covenant. The original proverb was, "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." In Genesis 2, in the Garden of Eden, we find God's first covenant with mankind. In this covenant of works, sometimes called the covenant of creation or the covenant of life, God forbade Adam and Eve from eating of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Adam and Eve tried to snatch life for themselves, but instead, they introduced death into the world, the first death being that of an animal slaughtered to make a covering for the couple. Because of Adam and Eve's sin of disobedience, the first blood was spilled. And it was God who had to do it. Thus began a trail of blood that would eventually lead to Golgotha.
