Personification is another name for sketching. There are instances and remnants of it in every language, nation, and era. Sketching allows one to observe and understand the many colors and forms of human life, as well as the shifting moods of life and the passing of time. Sketch writers can draw inspiration from anyone and use anyone as the subject and center of their work, regardless of the subject matter-be it social, intellectual, literary, or political, a famous person or a minor, an educated person or an ignorant one, a ruler or a lowly member of society. Prominent Urdu humorist Mujtaba Hussain has written interesting humorous sketches of numerous literary and non-literary personalities which are included in his three books containing personal sketches. This book "Chehra dar Chehra" is one of them.

خاکہ نگاری کو شخصیت نگاری کے نام سے بھی جانا جاتا ہے۔ ہر عہد، ہر ملک اور ہر زبان میں اس کے نمونے اور نقوش ملتے ہیں۔ زندگی اور زمانے کے بدلتے ہوئے مزاج و میلان، نشیب و فراز، ڈوبتی ابھرتی انسانی زندگی کے تمام رنگ و روپ خاکہ نگاری میں دیکھنے اور پڑھنے کو ملتے ہیں۔ معاملہ معاشرتی و سماجی، علمی و ادبی ہو یا سیاسی، بڑی شخصیت ہو یا معمولی، عالم ہو یا جاہل،حکمراں ہو یا سماج کا ایک ادنیٰ انسان، خاکہ لکھنے والا کسی سے بھی متاثر ہو سکتا ہے اور کسی شخصیت کو موضوع و محور بنا سکتا ہے۔ اردو کے ممتاز مزاح نگار مجتبیٰ حسین نے بیشمار ادبی اور غیر ادبی شخصیات کے دلچسپ مزاحیہ خاکے تحریر کیے ہیں جو شخصی خاکوں پر مشتمل ان کی تین کتابوں میں شامل ہیں۔ مجتبیٰ حسین کے بقول یہ خاکے احباب کے اصرار پر مختلف موقعوں اور تقاریب کے لیے لکھے گئے تھے۔ یہ کتاب "چہرہ در چہرہ" انہی تین کتابوں میں سے آخری کتاب ہے۔
