Crossroads is the epic autobiography of Alimamy Sorie Kamara born to parents of two of the most influential ethnic group with divergent cultural structures Sierra Leone, the Temnes from the paternal side and Creoles from the maternal side. The author takes you through a journey of his lifetime from infancy to adult hood.
The reader is taken through the vicissitudes and buffetings of navigating the many crossroads of growing up between two cultures.
This book is highly recommended for those who wish to reminisce their school days, both in day or boarding school, or growing up in a family with two very distinct socioeconomic structures. If you would like to learn about what life was like growing up in colonial Sierra Leone this is the book. If it's your wish to read for entertainment, this is the book also. In short this is a book for everyone, researchers, scholars, educationist, or thrill seekers. For example, while the origins of the Creoles in Sierra Leone is well established. Not so with the Temnes. The little that is known about Temnes is they were not originally from Sierra Leone. Some say they came from Eritrea, migrated northeast following the salt trade route and finally settled in Sierra Leone. Others claim the Temnes are descendants of the biblical King David, and that they (The Temnes), after the fall off Jerusalem migrated south along the Mediterranean Sea and settled for a long time in Eritrea and eventually found their way to Sierra Leone, However, all these claims are not supported by archeological evidence. So, researches, especially archaeologist might want to research the origins of Temne.
Crossroads is an easy read but very enlightening, and excellent companion on a say four-four flight. This book is addictive once you start reading it will be very hard to stop.
