"I'm not going the wrong way," he said softly. "I'm taking you to my home." "Why?" Alex stared at him in surprise. As curious as she was already about Connor and as attached as she was swiftly becoming to his son, she wasn't sure it was a good idea to actually see where he lived. It would be too easy to imagine their lives there together if she did. Oh, good grief! Connor kept his gaze on the road. "I'm taking you to my house because you obviously don't feel well. And because you'll be safe there." Ignoring the first part, she latched onto the second. "Safe? From whom? You don't seriously think Martin would do something so stupid as to actually try to harm me, do you?" Connor did look at her then, and she read the answer in his eyes. Alex shook her head in denial. She had sensed darkness in Martin, but she'd never sensed real evil. "Tell me something. Before he grabbed you this evening, would you have expected him to act that way? Do you want to chance your life on it?" No, she wouldn't have. And, no, she didn't.
