The films range from the days of silent films to 2020 but concentrate on the 1940s to 1980s, and along with Hollywood classics include reviews of Japanese, French, Italian, British, and German masterworks. The essays are poetic and interpretive, political and historical, and often personal in accounting for the films that made us who we are. The book includes the original posters, works of art in themselves.
