Two lesser-known European spy thrillers of the 1960's are paired up for this DVD release in Dark Sky Films' "Drive-In Double Feature" series. Both
Assassination In Rome
and
Espionage In Tangiers
have been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at their original theatrical aspect ratios (the former at 2.35:1, the latter at 1.85:1) and both look surprisingly good. While
suffers from moments of flickery contrast and a short but serious emulsion scratch around the two-thirds point, the transfer is colorful and crisp, and
also looks great, and with cleaner original elements. Both films have been dubbed into English, and the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo (retaining the original monophonic mixes); while the quality isn't exceptional, it's certainly as good as these films have ever sounded, especially on home video. Both features feature optional English subtitles, but no multiple language options. Like Dark Sky's other "Drive-In" titles, this disc offers an option allowing viewers to watch both films one after another, book-ended with trailers and announcements from vintage drive-in theaters materials, and with an intermission featuring snack-shop spots. Folks who crave sub-James Bond excitement will enjoy this disc, and Dark Sky have made sure it's fit to please fans of 60's genre moviemaking.
